Our skin is our bodies first line of defense. We often comprise this protection when we use the wrong products and strip away what’s called our acid mantle. Protect your skin! Knowing and understanding your skin type and the type of products to use will help you to avoid degrading the acid mantle. Beautiful glowing skin is all bout how you RESPECT it. The best foundation you can have is glowing skin.
Have you ever washed your face with soap or astringent cleanser or used a product and your skin felt dry and tight afterwards? Chances are you stripped the acid mantle of your skin. The acid mantle is a protective film that sits on top of the skin and acts as a gate keeper between you and the rest of the world. It’s a protective barrier against bacteria and other microorganisms.
The skin’s pH is slightly acidic, between 4.5-5.5. When sebum (oil) and sweat is mixed on the skin it creates the acid mantle to protect it. When the skin is exposed to extreme pH levels, dryness, dehydration and inflammation can occur if incorrect products are used for a given skin type. Understanding your skin type is key in order to avoid these occurrences with your skin. Extreme variations in pH can damage the skin’s barrier and functionality while causing irritation. For example, if you have dry and dehydrated skin and use a product that is too acidic it can further irritate your skin. Conversely if someone has oily skin and uses a product that is slightly alkaline it can contribute to oil and sebum build up and cause an acne breakout.
When our skins barrier function gets knocked out of balance, the inter-cellular lipids between our cell walls, designed to keep this barrier intact break down, creating unfavorable conditions. Protect your skin by knowing and understanding your skin type and the correct type of products to use for it.
