Waxing is the most common method of hair removal in spas today. Hair on any part of the body or face can be waxed. Warm wax is applied to the area and then removed, bringing the hair with it. There are two types of wax: hard and soft. Hard wax, which is easier on delicate skin, is often used on the face, underarms, and bikini area. Soft wax is used on the legs, arms, back, and chest.

Waxing reduces hair growth when performed at regular 30-day intervals. Because waxing pulls the hair out by the root, it grows back softer, finer, and thinner. The more you wax, the less hair grows back.

Below are some dos and don’ts to waxing:

DO allow 2 weeks of hair growth (1/4-1/2 inch). The wax needs something to hold onto! If hair is too short, more tweezing is involved. If hair is too long, the wax can tug and pull, causing more pain than necessary.

DO prep the skin with a sugar or salt scrub the day before to help loosen the hair from the follicle for an easier wax.

DO shower before a wax. Clean skin prevents infection. But try to avoid heavy creams or lotions on the area being waxed.

DO take an ibuprofen 30 minutes before your wax if you are sensitive or have a low pain tolerance. Avoid aspirin or any other medication containing blood thinning properties.

DO avoid caffeine as much as possible on the day of your service. Caffeine stimulates the nervous system and can increase blood flow and sensitivity.

DO avoid sex or friction for 24 hours after your appointment. If this is not an option, using a lubricant can help create a barrier and extra sensitivity is made more comfortable.

DO let us know if you are using Retin-A, Renova, Accutane, or any other skin care product containing AHA's.

DO schedule your appointments every 4-6 weeks. Hair grows in multiple cycles and staying in this time frame will give best results with less pain.

DON'T schedule your appointment a week before or during your period. Your body is more sensitive at that time, and any discomfort will be heightened.

DON'T apply any creams, lotions, etc to the area being waxed the day of your appointment.

DON'T sunbathe or tan for 24 hours before or after your appointment.

DON'T pick at ingrown hairs. The best solution is prevention. Use a buffing cloth or exfoliating glove in small circular motions while in the shower daily.

DON'T shave between appointments. Shaving will mess up appointment timing allowing the root to grow strong and makes waxing more painful.
